RED (my "Really Extraordinary Doberman")
Janterra's Pom Pom Punch ULI TLI SDI
November 10 2020 to October 11 2023
(Del Rey N Janterra No Lime Needed x CH Janterras Pretty Reckless)

I lost my heart and soul, my beautiful baby girl RED on October 11th.

RED was extraordinary. At 8.5 weeks of age, she was fully paralyzed in an awful head-on collision at highway speeds. Multiple professionals told me that she would never walk again, but RED had other ideas. RED worked hard to regain her basic motor skills. She was tenacious. Once she could stand, she almost never laid down. She would bounce up and down in spot for hours on end. And once she learned how to walk, run, and jump again, nothing could hold her back. She became strong enough to keep up with the rest of the pack on long hikes to the creek, to chase her sister and best friend Candela at full speed around the farmyard gleefully, and to "help" me with the farm chores for hours on end.

RED developed a love for sport scent detection, and NASDA let her play her favourite nose work games to her heart’s content. RED titled in Shed Dog, Urban Locate and Trail & Locate, and she placed High in Class many times against fully mobile competitors. She earned a place in the hearts of NASDA trainers, competitors, and judges. In 2022, RED was the #2 Doberman and the #38 dog of all breeds in all of North America in Shed Dog1. RED wowed me with her amazing scent detection and tracking abilities, and she proved that despite her unusual gait, her nose worked just fine.

RED loved people, and loved visiting with young and old alike. She was thrilled to be one of the Dobermans at the Meet the Breed at AKC in the summer. And even more thrilled when Mike took her leash and took her for a walk-about to meet the folks that weren’t coming all the way into the booth to say “hi”.

There are so many little things that I miss. No more RED thumping around my house like a tiny elephant. No more RED barking at me to tell me that she wants up on the bed, only to jump down two minutes later to run to the bay window and bark at the cat outside. And then to come back to the bed, to tell me (loudly) that she wanted back up again. No more RED flopping down on me (or Boots, or Vixen, or Candela) for a cuddle. No more RED and Kiss yammering at each other as they play endlessly. No more RED running so fast that the only way she can possibly stop is with her butt. No more RED flying past me at top speed, with a big grin on her face and a mischievous twinkle in her eyes, as I am yelling at the top of my lungs for her to come in the house. Mostly… just no more RED.

RED met every challenge she ever faced with fierce determination, good cheer and zero fear. She lived her life with joyful abandon and true gratitude. Every single day was RED’s best day ever, and she lived every moment to the fullest.

Her life may have been tragically short, but it was no less impactful for its brevity. I know that my special kid touched many, many people. She was the sweetest girl with a healthy dose of cheeky, her joy was infectious, and she touched so many hearts. And I truly believe that she reminded more people than just me that life is a gift – a gift to embrace, and to be grateful for, even when we are faced with challenges that seem almost insurmountable.

Safe travels, baby girl.  We WILL meet again.
